Australia legalizes use of MP3 players

The Australian parliament has passed a new law on copyright. The legislation had been revised as the government decided it was out of date.

Among other changes the law will legalize copying of CDs to MP3 players (provided it’s done for private use). As Attorney General Philip Ruddock put it: "It will legalise format shifting of materials such as music, newspapers, books, meaning that people can put their CD collection onto iPods or mp3 players".(The Age) On the other hand penalties for large scale commercial piracy will be toughened.

This law will come into effect when it receives royal approval. That is likely to happen before Christmas.

I think this is definitely a positive example; Allow private use and copying of records ( unlimited use, which is teh only sensible way) and thoughen large scale piracy laws. I very much applaud the valuable effort in cultural diffusion that allofmp3.com does

there is no way to pay for allofmp3.com

I'd love to refilL my balance, but there is no way to do so.

My account does not even show my balancce.

What is going on with allofmp3?

I am an American who doesn't understand.

I'm trying to use the site from England, but I can't refill my balance either. What's going on??

4. by Mathison, 9 December 2006, 20:31

I like allofmp3 but I am lazy!
I believe allofmp3 should apply their effort to come up with a way of doing business.

5. by Jay, 10 December 2006, 08:42

Evidently, all the major US credit cards and paypal are boycotting alofmp3.com because of the RIAA's view that allofmp3.com is an illegal download site.

6. by Jay, 10 December 2006, 08:55

You'll have to get un-lazy and find alternate ways if you want to use this great site. The problem is with the RIAA and its european counterpart, they're the ones putting the pressure on the credit card companies.
I believe allofmp3.com is doing its best under the circumstances.

I had no problems today refilling with a credit card. Mastercard to be exact. I hope these refilling problems are short term.

8. by bibiker, 10 December 2006, 20:20

In the UK: go to a shop displaying the PayPoint sign. Buy a UKash voucher (you can pay cash). Create an Xrost account and make a payment into that using your UKash voucher number. Then top up your AllofMP3 account using the credit in your XRost account. A bit complicated but it works and it's completely annonymous.

I just refilled last week using my Mastercard also, but my mother who also has an account can't. I don't get it!!!

10. by Saketh Ram, 12 December 2006, 16:29

12. by burmie, 14 December 2006, 05:33

I had a problem about a month ago, trying to get a pin code, so I just used my credit card, no problem. But I would prefer getting a pin code, than using my credit card directly. Someone mention Xrost is down, I think it is too, I can't use it from Japan.

The music industry needs to wake up!

The AllofMP3 model works - and it works really well.

I own most of the stuff I download on CD, cassette, and vinyl. It is just that I'm too lazy to re-rip them into MP3. And yes, I want all of my songs unlocked so that I can play them in my car, on my phone, and even on my watch and camcorder. With iTunes, I get one player, that's it - I can't even share with my wife and kids. That's stupid! :-(

I really do WANT to pay for my music, I just don't want the songs encrypted. If iTunes offered their stuff in MP3 format, I'd buy (though it is nice to pay less at AllofMP3).

Sometimes I take a chance on some unknown artist, and it turns out they totally suck, it's nice knowing that I only paid $1.32 for the album instead of $10! Who has time to preview? I want to toss that unknown album in my cart on a whim and listen to it later while I jog or mow the yard. If the album wasn't to my liking, I press delete. The artist got paid regardless.

For me, the ideal music service site would be:

1) The ability to own the song and to pay for it by the download size (the lower the quality, the lower the price). I'd pay $16.00 for a lossless CDA. But if I want the album in lossy 128K form, I should only have to pay a tenth of that.
2) Allow for multiple, unlocked formats (MP3, Ogg, WMA,...) and automatically download them onto my hard drive in Artist\Album\Track-Song format.
3) Have an unresticted (and gigantic) library to choose from. I like experimenting with artists that I've never heard of, let alone artists that I can't even pronouce. Can you say Numa Numa?
4) Offer a search engine that actually delivers what you are searching for by artist, song, genre, etc... Sometimes I don't even know what I want. Similar artists and genres are like fishing - you're not sure what you are going to get, but it's fun anyway.
5) And if I don't visit for months, I don't want to be charged for idle time (a monthly rental model).

That's my wish - a desparate wish - and only AllofMp3 offers it. I love these guys. I'm even cool with doubling the rate - just get legal, or rather, get the RIAA and others to finally wake up.

Nobody buys CDs anymore.

And lastly, if every music player in the world will play an MP3, why is it such a sin to want to buy the music in that format?

I can't top up my account in Australia using Click and Buy with my Visa card. I've done everything I was told to do I think, can anyone help

17. by xboxguy512, 17 December 2006, 10:22

I think its great that there gonna legalise all this, but the fact is i reckon it was done a bit late, seeing as how most people who have cd's + an mp3 player already copy the cd files to their mp3. I agree with flash from atlanta in the fact that barely anybody buys cd's anymore. They should just have a system where you go into a music store, bring your MP3 player with you, tell them what album you want, you give them your mp3 player and then they load it on your MP3 player and their you go got what you want and its still as legal as buying a CD. Aussie asphalt guy if your having problems then just check that you've paid your credit card bill, I live in australia and im able to normally top up my account. Merry Christmas From Xbox Guy ^_^

USE XROST PEOPLE! Look in the FAQS there is info to help you in the comments of others.

Again.. Use your Visa or M/C to put money in XROST then transfer it to Allof.

It's a little bit fiddly but I pay using the following method (from UK).
1. Poddle off to the local co-op and buy a UKASH voucher (see www.ukash.co.uk).
2. Use the UKASH voucher at www.xrost.biz.
3. Use the xrost voucher at allofmp3.

I have to do a conversion from £ to $ myself at some stage, but really is easy.
Actually pay by cash, so my wife no longer has the worry of me using the credit card on a site that she's not sure about.
Cheers.

Thanks to Steve for post. It really is that easy for anyone in the UK (and probably the EU). All you need to do to get your UKASH voucher is to find a PayPoint, PayZone or E.Pay service (Co-op, Smile, News Agent, Petrol Station etc, there are thousands) ……. best to print off the page from the UKASH site with the UKASH bar code as your local retailer may not be familiar with UKASH (there are several card & voucher schemes use the PayPoint etc system/network).

I used this method to make my first payment to AllOfMP3 after joining a couple of weeks back. I’m and old man so if I can do it easily ……… ;-) Dave B.

31. by LLoydy, 24 May 2007, 21:51

32. by Mikeysan, 2 April 2008, 15:22

Given that this has taken so long to get sorted I'd recommend you try a combination of sites. I use alltunes to listen to the music and then use mp3fiesta to download. It's not as user friendly to download but if you use mozilla and install the "downthemall" extension it's quite easy to download in bulk. It's a pretty manageable workaround.
