Music industry reaction to the DRM abolishment proposal by Apple
The music industry met the Apple’s proposal to abolish DRM with no enthusiasm.
Rather music executives pointed to Mr Jobs that interoperability is the issue and that Apple shouldn’t pretend its all labels’ fault when European consumer protection bodies outlaw iTunes for its proprietary DRM. IFPI commented that contrary to Apple’s CEO argument interoperability won’t be that disastrous to quality control and security. The Apple’s appeal to the labels that they are selling 90% of their music without DRM protection anyway was rejected with indignation.
The Norwegian Consumer Council which had recently declared the iTunes store illegal was not impressed either with Apple’s efforts to shift the blame on the labels.
IFPI
The IFPI position is that absence of interoperability, and not DRM is the problem.
John Kennedy, IFPI’s head, said: "We have been talking about the desirability of interoperability [of DRM systems] for some time... We are pleased that Steve Jobs now wants to address interoperability… It should be neither impossible, nor unreasonably burdensome, to implement interoperability whilst maintaining the security of DRM." He continued, "[Mr Jobs] appears to be saying that interoperability has draconian side effects. We don't believe that need be the case."
Mr Kennedy also suggested that "[Steve Jobs] is expressing some frustration at being the bad guy...and people like the Norwegian government beating him up, and he’s taking it out on us."
Warner
The Warner Music chairman Edgar Bronfman, Jr commented, "we advocate the continued use of DRM in the protection of our and of our artists’ intellectual property… "The notion that music does not deserve the same protections as software, television, film, video games or other intellectual property simply because there is an unprotected legacy product available in the physical world is completely without logic or merit. We will not abandon DRM, nor will we disadvantage services that are successfully implementing DRM for both content and consumers," he promised. "As a content company, we, of course, want consumers to seamlessly access our music and to use the music they have purchased on any platform and with any service, physical or digital.”
RIAA
The RIAA welcomed the Apple’s open letter as an "offer to license Fairplay to other technology companies is a welcome breakthrough and would be a real victory for fans, artists and labels… There have been many services seeking a license to the Apple DRM. This would enable the interoperability that we have been urging for a very long time."
A DRM interoperability development consortium
A cross-industry body called Coral Consortium which is working on DRM interoperability and includes all major labels and Hollywood movie studios, RIAA, HP, Sony and other companies even invited Apple to join and issued an open letter in response. “The directors of Coral Consortium were pleased to hear about your interest in interoperability… It would appear from your "Thoughts on Music" that you may not be familiar with our organization so we would like to take this opportunity to brief you… We have been wrestling with the issues around interoperability for some years and have concluded that it is not so much a technology problem as a business problem.”
Norwegian consumer ombudsman
Torgeir Waterhouse, senior adviser to Norway’s Consumer Council, said Mr Jobs was "pushing the ball as far away from himself as he can". Apple is "still the company that's selling music to the consumers and are responsible for offering the consumer a fair deal according to Norwegian law…The fact remains that both iTunes Music Store and others are unfair to consumers no matter how many download services follow the proprietary approach," Waterhouse said.

Mr. Bronfman and his colleages simply don't seem to understand that locking all the doors, but leaving the windows wide open, won't protect them from theft. That was Mr. Job's point about DRM. Even more importantly, the music industry still doesn't understand that their product isn't worth anywhere near what they're trying to sell for in music stores--online or otherwise. Until they get their prices inline with what consumers expect to pay, consumers will agressively seek other alternatives. The marketplace will always have it's way.

PAYMENT PROBLEMS - NOW NO XFROST.
I have no Diners or JCB card, so I cannot see anyway around this. Read via google news that we may be losing this site this time around or it's going to be taken over by a big corporate with their inflated prices.

If you aren't able to get the issue resolved for payment methods, if at all possible, if you would be able to set up the choice to pay by money order or postal money order, that would be sweet. I love this site and hope it is able to survive. Good luck.

At the moment it is only by mastercard.Visa have stopped usage of thier card on allofmp3.This is a bit hypocritical as you can still use it on many illegal sites(porn)

Make sure you go to the website and not allofmp3 explorer.If you go onto allofmp3 explorer click on the home icon at the top of the page to get to website and do as mentioned above.I can assure you it does work.When i use this method i never see the chronopay option

ian i can assure you it does not work for me but if i go thru my friends log in it does work, our best guess that it is somehow tied to the isp that your email is connected with, if the riaa has gotten to your isp i think you will not be able to make a payment

I did as described by Ian S. and were able to get to the page he mentioned. BUT - the payment options only allowed for Mastercards, even if the page headline said VISA/Mastercard payments were possible. Now - that is a bit weird... Any suggestions.
As for Xrost. Okay, the page is down at the moment, but if it comes back up it IS possible to find the url for the link to XROST-card validations inside allofmp3.com (which seemed otherwise removed from the page). Since I am unsure whether I step over a line drawn by allofmp3 I will not give the url here. But the option to use XROST cards on the site is still there. The link to it is just not there. Weird. Again.

This is classic Big Brother innit? (George Orwell, not the stupid reality TV prog)
One dude comes up with a good idea which the majority think is ace and which doesn't hurt anybody, the idea blossoms and makes millions of people happy. Big Brother decides that they aren't getting their slice of the pie, so they get all the other bullies in the playground to each kick away and undermine until the good thing crumbles.
At a time when many artists actively encourage/allow us to make sound recordings of live gigs (not video) and take photos on phones and small digital cameras for our personal enjoyment at home, and when we can buy cheap copies of t-shirts all over the world and nobody has a shit fit.. why not cheap (not free) downloads?
I'm sure that many of us Western-types are ceasing to buy many items, not juts cd's from our national stores (especially UK) wherever possible, bevcause we are fed-up with being shafted hard in the butt with ridiculous prices for pretty much everything!
Barclays and other banks make a multi-million GBpound profit on at least a monthly basis, UK banks charge illegal sums for sending you a letter to tell you that you're overdrawn (probably as a result of buying too man things with over-inflated prices) and now VISA and the other money-moving monopolies are helping deliver the final death blows to what is in essence a glorious and much-loved loophole in international law.
Who gives a monkey's if I pay 3$ for an album via Russia? I'm not even fussy of it's a maffia front from which the proceeds will go to buy more hugely expensive players for Chelsea! As long as they aren't oppressing people or abusing children I think we're all quite happy...
You're telling me that Metallica are short of a few quid? They make at least a million a gig and that's just what they pay themselves, the band before overheads!
I hardly think that the late Jimi Hendrix or Janis Joplin will turn in their grave cause I ordered one track of theirs for the price of a first class postage stamp.
I go to regular gigs/concerts and pay my often obscenely expensive ticket which goes straight to the booking agent, A&R guys, artists etc. I usually get a tour t-shirt. I buy a couple of bastard expensive approved beers at the gig. I travel to other cities to watch the band thus supporting/utilising privatised public transport.
Basically I pay everybody in the chain who has their legitimate hand out for their cut.
So Allofmp3 is onto a winner, it's great value for money, it's like a reward scheme for capitalist cattle such as ourselves. We've paid over the odds for too long. The i-pod may be upwards of %15 more expensive in the UK, but the good news was that you could stock it with legal tunes at a decent price. Surely how and where we buy is still our choice. If the big guns have priced us into needing to shop on-line for reasons of convenience and economy, then that's their problem.
Surely the answer for them is not to persecute, but rather to compete. Change the way they work and set up your own similar site/service with similar value for money.
All the money on court costs and legal fees could have gone towards a solution, not wasted on persecution.
Playground bullying and forcing our hand to pay what is plainly obsecenely ridiculous prices and then blocking our opportunity to shop where we please is plain wrong.
The thing is that these motherf*****s know we're onto them and know that we the end-user can't do jack about it.
From my place in the world, the really distressing thing is that the days of ANARCHY IN THE UK have deteriorated into APATHY in the UK.
We all bitch about it, but we just can't be arsed to do anything about it, because we're essentially powerless in a free country.
In the 80's we had Morrissey,Sting and Geldoff as our spokespeople, in the 90's we had Nirvana, Radiohead and Bono and now sadly in the 00's we have Chris Martin writing on his hands and strapping his fingers together with electrical tape and telling me my cup of coffee isn't fair...
All I wanted was to download Deep Purple - Deep Purple coz it's about £16.00 in the shops....
So much for depreciation....

Well guys I have been using allofmp3 for the past 4 years or so long before it was called allofmp3. It will be a sad day if they do shut up shop. I have broadened my range of favourite singers due to the fact you can listen to any album before you purchase. And on many occasions I have actually gone down the virgin store and purchased a cd at £20.00 quid plus also theres a massive amount of music on this site that you cany get anywere else.Im sure there must be a way to keep this great site going. Maybe these guys at allof mp3 should give us free access to downloads This would Pee the bigboys off. I dont mind sending $50 dollars every now and then to a friend in Russia (If you know what i mean)

I think it's very sad that the payment glitch has provided an opportunity for a few leeches to try to make a fast buck by selling "options" on vouchers.
I know this is the Digital Age, but it is still feasible for AOMP3 to take payment by post, so why aren't they getting this set up? I would wait for the week it would take to process paper payments and they could email me back a pin once the payment had been banked.
It's ironic that I can remember the resistance to paying using credit cards and now loads of people would be ecstatic if AOMP3 would only take their credit card payments.

2. In the "Recipient's Email" field type: the email address
3. In the "Amount" field type: "1" (your $1.00 payment)
4. In the "Category" field select: "Service" (Keeping it legal)
5. In the "subject" field type: "EMAIL LIST",
6. In the "message" field type: "PLEASE PUT ME ON YOUR EMAIL LIST". (By doing this, you are creating a service and maintaining the legality of the system by "paying" for the service.)
7. Finally, click on the "Continue" button to complete the payment.
8. Repeat these steps for each of the 6 email addresses.
That's it! (By sending the $1.00 payment to each address, you are implementing the compounding POWER of the system. You will reap what you sow!)

STEP 3:
Now take the 1 email off of the list that you see above (from your saved file), move the other addresses up (6 becomes 5, 5 becomes 4, etc.) and add YOUR email address (the one used for your Pay Pal account) as number 6 on the list. This is the only part of the document that should be changed. **Make sure to use the email address you registered with Pay Pal**
STEP 4:
now post new file created in STEP 3 to at least 200 newsgroups or message boards. Keep in mind that there are tens of thousands of groups online! All you need is 200, but remember the more you post the more money you make as well as everyone else on the list!
Use Netscape, Internet Explorer, Fire fox, Safari, or whatever your internet browser is to search for various news groups, on-line forums, message boards, bulletin boards, chat sites, discussions, discussion groups, on-line communities, etc.
For example? Log on to any search engine like Yahoo.com or Google.com and type in a subject like 'MILLIONAIRE MESSAGE BOARD', MONEY MAKING DISCUSSIONS', 'MONEY MAKING FORUMS', or 'BUSINESS MESSAGE BOARD', etc. You will find thousands and thousands of message boards. Click them one by one and you will find the option to post a new message. Fill in the subject, which will be the header that everyone sees as they scroll through the list of postings in a particular group, and post the article with the NEW list of email addresses included. THAT'S IT!!! All you have to do is jump to different newsgroups and post away. After you get the hang of it, it will take about 60 seconds for each newsgroup.
HOW THE MONEY WORKS:
When you post 200 messages in various forums, it is estimated that at LEAST 15 people will respond and send you a $1.00 ($15.00). Those 15 will Post 200 Posts each and 225 people send you $1.00 ($225.00), etc. through 6 levels of email addresses. For comprehension purposes, here is an easy viewing chart:
1) 15(1) = 15 people ($1) = $15
2) 15(15) = 225 people ($1) = $225
3) 15(225) = 3375 people ($1) = $3,375
4) 15(3375) = 50625 people ($1) = $50,625
