EMI offers its catalogue in DRM-free downloads
On April 02 EMI announced that its catalogue would be available for downloading without DRM. iTunes “ a true pioneer” will be the first on-line store to offer CD quality downloads without DRM which could be played on any device. According to EMI’s CEO this move reflects the current “consumer demand”. A track will cost about $1.29 in the highest quality. Also customers will be able to upgrade the files they already have downloaded to a DRM free mode for a mere $0.30.
According to the corporate press release announcing this historic decision “new premium downloads [will be offered] for retail on a global basis, making all of its digital repertoire available at a much higher sound quality than existing downloads and free of digital rights management (DRM) restrictions.” EMI believes “that offering consumers the opportunity to buy higher quality tracks and listen to them on the device or platform of their choice will boost sales of digital music.”
“Apple has announced that iTunes will make individual AAC format tracks available from EMI artists at twice the sound quality of existing downloads, with their DRM removed, at a price of $1.29/€1.29/£0.99. iTunes will continue to offer consumers the ability to pay $0.99/€0.99/£0.79 for standard sound quality tracks with DRM still applied. Complete albums from EMI Music artists purchased on the iTunes Store will automatically be sold at the higher sound quality and DRM-free, with no change in the price. Consumers who have already purchased standard tracks or albums with DRM will be able to upgrade their digital music for $0.30/€0.30/£0.20 per track. All EMI music videos will also be available on the iTunes Store DRM-free with no change in price.”
EMI really hopes that “exited fans” will see this move as an incentive to buy more music.

A few points for discussion:
Is iTunes the first store to offer DRM-free high quality downloads?
How much the track should really cost (provided the seller is not on a verge of bankruptcy)?
What does it change for the artists?

It's a start in the right direction, now they need to drop the price to about .35 or .40 cents per song.
2. by Ben, 5 April 2007, 12:15
Cool, nice move. The prices will drop as time passes. But, WTF am I supposed to be doing with AAC? I want freedom of choice: give me OGG Vorbis, others MP3, FLAC, etc etc etc.
3. by Wlad, 5 April 2007, 19:49
How interesting! The article is called "... in drm-FREE downloads", therefore, I might suggest that all downloads should be absolutely free, no coast at all, $0.00, but this is not for free! This is NOT cool! It would be cooler if they suggested us analog copies of their master-tapes (at 15 ips), but not this!
4. by Wlad, 5 April 2007, 19:54
Hah! That's free of DRM, not for free! But, after all, I want freedom of choice: for example, WAVs, OGGs, APEs on high bitrates etc.
5. by Jonny, 5 April 2007, 22:43
Maybe it's a step in the right direction, but these prices are ridiculous!
And by the way - they try to f--k our European asses: 1.29 USD = 0.96 Euro = 0.65 GBP at the time!
So why pay 1.29 EUR resp. 0.79 Pound?
Guess it's because we pay too much most of the time anyway, so these greedy morones think they can rip us off and tell us about our great 'bargain' at the same time!
F.U.C.K. U!
I'll stick to AllOfMp3!
6. by neolith, 6 April 2007, 01:50
Is it just me, or is no-one else doing the maths? The EMI prices compare reasonably well with AOMP3 prices: An uncompressed AOMP3 track typically costs over $1, and even with FLAC it's still in a similar price bracket. Downloading an uncompressed album from AOMP3 can easily cost more than just buying the CD from Amazon... And no, I'm not an EMI rep.
7. by Jon, 6 April 2007, 02:50
neolith, EMI is offering DRM-free 256kbps audio, not uncompressed/lossless audio.
8. by Unicorn, 6 April 2007, 12:31
Neolith, it's only EMI's catalogue, and not even all of it.
Give me AllofMP3 anyday.
9. by spore, 7 April 2007, 07:17
it should have been so for music. without any DRM (whose the ass that invented that in the first place?!!!) and can be copied whenever to wherever we please.
10. by James, 8 April 2007, 05:27
The new DRM free high quality tracks don't cost EMI anymore than the regular ones but they want us to consider them more valuable and therefore pay extra to get rid of their own self imposed limitations. All we want is reasonably priced music without having to deal with this kind of rubbish. I think EMI do understand perfectly well how we all feel but its a top heavy monolithic old boat that makes crap decisions like this one.
11. by Fredski, 9 April 2007, 19:04
The new DRM-free high quality tracks will be larger files than the older low-quality DRM crap. It will therefore cost EMI more in bandwidth charges to distribute these tracks to their wholesalers, hence the premium price tag. It will cost the wholesalers more to distribute these tracks to the end-users too. However, it must be noted that current wholesale bandwidth costs are around £0.02 per MB which translates to £0.04 per minute of audio at 256 kbps VBR encoding. This adds £2.40 to the cost of a 60-minute album. Yet, EMI is keeping the price of full album downloads the same as before. So this is a real bargain for consumers.
On the one hand I want to congratulate EMI for finally listening to their consumers' demands, but also deplore them for ripping us off in Europe. I don't believe for one minute that the recording artists will receive higher royalties per track sold in Euro's and even higher royalties per track sold to a UK £ buyer. Who's keeping the profit made in the exchange rate conversions? I suspect it may be EMI Music themselves.
Soon another major music catalogue owner will follow suit and there will be competition to force lower prices of DRM-free high quailty single track downloads. Lets keep our fingers crossed. However, if these trends continue, there will soon be no scope for AllOfMP3 to make a profit unless they move their servers to the UK and US where bandwidth is cheaper.
12. by Richard Karsmakers, 11 April 2007, 14:02
So, let me understand this correctly...a DRM-free download of a whole album would cost me MORE than a genuine CD? Stoo-pid.
13. by Paulus, 11 April 2007, 18:25
The price that EMI is announcing is too high! I buy 320K DRM-free MP3 musics here in AOMP3 for $0.30. Why would i want to pay $1,29 for a 256k DRM-free AAC?
I’m glad that EMI decided to sell digital music without DRM. No, seriously. It’s awesome.
But on the other hand:
Imagine if every car was built with an onboard computer that prevented you from driving it on certain streets. The auto manufacturers claim that while it may seem restrictive, this onboard computer is actually a feature that makes the whole car manufacturing and owning experience better for everyone.
Consumers become dissatisfied. They think to themselves, I own the damn car, I should be able to decide what streets to drive it on.
So then one of the car companies–let’s say Ford–announces that you can now buy a car that does not have the onboard computer built in. Plus, it’s faster than the old type of car. And it costs more.
Consumers might rightly ask, “Since it doesn’t cost you extra to not put the onboard computer in a car, why am I paying more?”
To which Ford might reply, “You’re paying for the extra speed and functionality.”
“But that’s functionality that ought to be part of the car to begin with. You sabotaged it, and now you’re selling it back to me like it’s an extra.”
“Okay, then you’re just paying for the extra speed.”
“I never asked for a faster car. Just one that drives where I want it to go.”
“Look, do you want a car that drives on every street or don’t you?”
My guess is that this is the end result of a lot of backroom dealing, where EMI would only agree to sell its music without DRM if Apple agreed to sacrifice its policy that every song on the iTunes Music Store would cost 99 cents, no more, no less.
Now that there’s a leak in the 99 cent dam, how long before every song is $1.29?
14. by jodaaddy, 11 April 2007, 20:12
Yeah, interesting how the new DRM-free files are 30 cents extra. It really doesn't cost them that much more to upload a higher-quality track. But it's a cute way of convincing a retarded consumer they're getting a better product, when really that 30 cents is just making up for their lost revenue due to DRM-free music. As for us, long live Moscow!
15. by Jimmy, 16 April 2007, 02:18
Jonny said: "Maybe it's a step in the right direction, but these prices are ridiculous!... I'll stick to AllOfMp3!"
I totally agree with you, but for the time being AllOfMp3 does NOT provide any way for us to pay by credit card!! So it is not possible to buy any music...
16. by NATVNYRKR, 18 April 2007, 17:37
Look one way or another they are trying new ways of extording more money from us.....yea "I got your $129 right here"...All I want is AllofMp3 to fix their credit card payment Problems..."PLEASE....

The guys in the music biz should all attend an economics class.
I am a music freak, but I do have a limited budget. There was always
so much great music out there I was interesed in, but I wasn´t
able to afford to buy it all.
With the introduction and rising popularity of digital music,
the product "music" itself has changed. It is no more high-margin speciality product (if you wanted to get music, you only had the
choice to buy a way too expensive CD) to a low-margin commodity.
If the music biz managers had the brains to understand this simple fact, they would change their pricing strategy, applying serious
economies of scale. Sell lots of low-price, low-margin digital files instead of every month less high-price, high-margin files/CDs.
As long as they don´t get this, anybody with a sane mind will try
to get their music from ALLOFMP3 instead of all the other rip-off
stores (p.ex. I-tunes, DRM-files at ridiculous, crap-quality 128kbit).
By the way. What´s the issue with songboom. I can´t get anymore refills by gift certificate, presumably because of "low stock". Is there another reason. Are they getting their ass busted?
Any other ways to refill?
18. by Chris, 21 April 2007, 19:50
Who in their right mind would pay ever increasing prices for ever increasing regurgitated CD's in the form of ' Best Of '
' The Complete ' ' Classic Album ' ' Remix ' ' The Early Years '

As you know, the freakin record companies don't care about us, the listener. Albeit, there are some out there that do LISTEN to the listener. The only reason why the record comapnies are NOW releasing DRM-Free music, is because they are losing big time.
The world is advancing like we know, unfortunately the record companies have to deal with something we call the end user...you and me.
So much selection leaves the record companies gasping for air and us cheering. The only thing left is for them to inflate there dingy's and stay afloat.
People (including artists) will argue. Yes, outlets like AllofMp3 and Mp3stor are infringing on copyright (in certain countries). Well, i say...grow up. You know what, it will make the artist work that much harder and also make the music to the masses.
Cheers and Peace

Funny stuff. I have a really hard time scoffing up more than $15 for a DVD- you think I'm buying a piece of crap CD for 10-20? Hell no.
I guess they're... trying... That's gotta count for something, right? *rolls eyes*
21. by Ronnie, 24 April 2007, 05:27
I don't care.Allofmp3 was there when they weren't.So I'll stay with Allofmp3 no matter what until there just isn't any more music I need.
Hint to Allofmp3:There are still quite a few albums you do not offer.

i would just like to buy from allofmp3 the site has been down for a couple ofmonths now whats going on wkth this. and when will i be able to do this
23. by Lyosha Kharlamov, 25 April 2007, 03:42
In case I didn't make it clear: paying for downloads (as well as CDs, DVDs, etc.) helps the artists recoup the recording expenses and get closer to the point when the artist can start earning an actual income from their music.
Of course that may or may not be the case with allofmp3. This particular site may or may not pay the labels/artists anything. In the case of iTunes and similar U.S.-based and European services, part of your money DOES reach the labels, which count a portion of your payment as part of the artist's "recouping expenses". So when you buy a download, you actually help the artist of that particular download make the actual real-life living as the artist you're listening to when you play that download.

Musicians get their money from concerts, not usually with cd sales from RIAA associated labels. That's well established.
Right now a label can buy the rights to a bands music and then nickel and dime them for the expenses, always in excess of the amount they purchased the music for - including concert tours so the band makes nothing.
What happens as much is that after signing, the label will decied the music is 'against their interests' to produce or it's not commercially viable (the later is for bands that were popular 20 or 30 years ago) and it's archived.
The band ends up with no rights to play a note of their own song. Why? This reduces the competition for whatever the label wants to produce. Even the master for Aqualung was "lost" until a few years ago. The studio had no intention of releasing it until finally they became convinced it might be worth it.
I think all the groups like Asia, Hot Tuna, Chocolate Watchband, Bonzo Dog Band, 13th Floor Elevators, etc. should thank people who took the time to rip music off vinyl and created interest in them again. The problem is bands don't hold the rights to their music.
Wilco is a classic example with a story online; Marillion, UTube has a great video of Dick Dale's advice for musicians, Janis Ian, and there are hundreds of others with stories on line. emusic isn't even courting major labels.
25. by aikanae, 14 June 2007, 01:31
DRM free? Well, the tracks are embedded with your personal information so that if they are ever found online, P2P, or on someone else's HD - you are an accomplice.

I’ve got an Amazon gift certificate burning holes in my pocket,
and I want to get the most bang for my buck.
Enter the Secret Amazon Web Pages:
http://tinyurl.com/38sojf
This is where you’re going to find the "latest sales, rebates, and limited-time offers" from
Amazon, and you can score some pretty deep discounts if you’re a savvy shopper.
Next, there’s the special Sale link. This is open every Friday, and ONLY on Fridays.
You can find the same good discounts here as you would in hidden Deals, although some
Fridays you can really get lucky and make off like an Amazon bandit - I’ve seen discounts
there as low as 75% off sticker price.

Another Dumb Blonde
A young ventriloquist is touring the clubs and one night he's doing a show in a small club in a small town in Arkansas. With his dummy on his knee, he's going through his usual dumb blonde jokes when a blonde woman in the fourth row stands on her chair and starts shouting: ''I've heard enough of your stupid blonde jokes. What makes you think you can stereotype women that way? What does the color of a person's hair have to do with her worth as a human being? It's guys like you who keep women like me from being respected at work and in the community and from reaching our full potential as a person, because you and your kind continue to perpetuate discrimination against, not only blondes, but women in general...and all in the name of humor!''
The ventriloquist is embarrassed and begins to apologize, when the blonde yells, ''You stay out of this, mister! I'm talking to that little jerk on your knee!''
