Liberal Party says 'Copyright law is outdated'

The Norway Liberal Party (Venstre) which is holding 6% of the seats in parliament has issued a resolution stating that “Copyright law is outdated”.

“A society where culture and knowledge is free and accessible by everyone on equal terms is a common good. Large distributors and copyright owners systematically and widely misuse copyright, and thereby stall artistic development and innovation.”

Here are some changes proposed by the party “to reinstate the balance in copyright law”:
- Free file sharing for personal use “Laws and regulations, both national and international, need to be changed so they only regulate limitations of use and distribution in a commercial for-profit context.”
- Shorter commercial copyright term (the current span in Norway is 70 years).
- Ban on DRM – “…anyone who has bought the right to use a product needs a technologically neutral way of using it. This means that distributors can not control how citizens wish to play back legally bought digital music.”

"It is wrong to make an entire generation of criminals," said vice chairwoman of the Liberal Party, Trine Skei Grande. "We managed to make compensation models when the photocopier was invented, but we haven't managed to do anything about modern technology. The law must adapt to the citizens and the impact of technological innovation." (The Register)

I've always loved Norway, but now I love them much more. It has always struck me as insane that a guy who writes ONE good song can basically spend the rest of his life living off it. It's Just Not Fair!

I can't stand DRM but I can't stand people who wish to outlaw it even more. Firms that release mp3s for sale should have the right to attach whatever strings (within reason) they wish to their downloads; if people don't like it, then they don't have to buy it.

"It has always struck me as insane that a guy who writes ONE good song can basically spend the rest of his life living off it. It's Just Not Fair!"

Let's say 1 million people listen to the ONE good song 10 times each--that's 10 million listens of (for argument's sake) a 4 minute song, or 40 million listener-minutes. That comes out to 76 listener-years--so I fail to see how it is inherently unfair for someone who creates a person-lifetime of enjoyable music not be entitled to a lifetime of prosperity as a result. Maybe the 70 year thresh-hold for copyright expiration is excessive, but you have not advanced that argument one bit with your comment.

hail norway - it seems it still has some politicians with a bloody brain!

as an afterthought on the rest of it - it seems labels are spending more money on "copyright protection" systems this days than on executives that are actually able to find talent!

why do i download music - stealing it and breaking 500 laws???? because i grew up like that and nobody bloody cared!!! i bought records (yeah you read correctly - records, the vinyl stuff) and enjoyed them, i got tapes of records of friends to listen to, i was happy to listen to john peel (many of you wouldnt even know him anymore) on bbc - and it was a pain in the a** because with time differences and stuff it wasnt easy. i poss. have everything what appeared later as peel sessions records on tapes (and a hell of a lot more)and dont think it made a god da** dent in the peel sessions vinyl sales - it likely increased them, i bought much of it, my friends did after hearing the tapes at my house, their friends did etc.

so could it be today - if there would be something to buy!!!! people dont share more or less than before. they share faster and more sophisticated. i still by the albums i really like and consider worthy as a whole album. i do so since long before digital music and still do. increasingly less - there is just less good music (sorry, american idol compilations just dont cut it for me).

i get annoyed about the fact that i have vinyl thats 75 years old and plays "just fine" - or even just 40 and some of my fav. music (i grew up with) about 30 and less and it is playing just fine (kk - some is just "grinded" down, others are in mint condition) while cd's i bought not even 10years ago getting "problems" like "disintegrating" tracks and (what you actually call it properly???) this silver layers in / on them causing "read errors"! i paid for this inferior crap more than for vinyl in the beginning / now about the same as it used to cost for a 10 YEAR OWNERSHIP!!!! and that was before even more restrictions like drm and all this bull....!
is there actually anybody else who ever thought about that??? and maybe a sue happy lawyer to take on the labels on a class action consumer protection tort???

i think all that keeps me from getting really -hmmm- upset - might be the nice way to put it, is the fact that SHIIT MUSIC

5. by Lsdeep, 5 May 2007, 10:59

i somehow got force posted there :)

well, where bloody was i stopped? - rite, SHI-IIIT music makes sure i dont waste money. i am happy to get the few and far in between here (just one source of many), i still buy stuff - usually at the shows directly of the bands (its not really cheaper, but at least i support guys that work their butt off to give me a good time and not a bunch of nuckle heads that try to finance their search for the "superstar" britney whoever with my cash)i spend lots of time to digitalize my over 13.000 records and clean the sound up while getting them on hdd's - and no, sadly not to distribute them ;). i see a "new and growing" vinyl scene again and increasingly more vinyl releases again, what gives me hope in a way, i see more and more bands and artists releasing their own stuff online as downloads for money or free whats refreshing. if you take this step you must believe you have something worth it and dont need the mega bucks push of a major label (listen to EMI of the sex pistols to amuse me)....

anyway, as long as we deal with corporate crap and insane pricing for ever decreasing user rights and restrictions by the "big guys" we can consider ourself happy for sites like -all of mp3, the old grand daddy napster before shut down / turned around, etc - early kazaa and the many old and new other sites that provide us "financially affordable" (in a kind of way - like here) and just free ways to share our passion as it used to be. i just chose to see allofmp3 as my "digital fleemarket" i cruise every other week for old and new little treasures to dig out and buy on a bargain in a reasonable quality (its the - i digged to free feeds and got the "famous" 15sec missing in the front, 10sec missing in the end 64k "audiotape" from AM radio quality cut, now i d/l the 254k version - if not toooo sure the 128k for extended evaluation in car, on ipod etc and if it is really good i even go and buy the fucking album if i dont have it anyway already)

now i could just keep going and going and going and....
but i dont - cause i lost the f***ing "red string" already a while ago ;P

Everytime I play a movie or video in Windows Media Play the time counts backwards. Like its counting down til the video finishes. It started doing that recently. How can I change it so that it counts up til it finishes?
